About inclusion, in the schools of Țara Făgărașului

This week, on April 4 and 5, we met with students from “Doamna Stanca” Făgăraș National College and Sâmbăta de Sus Secondary School, for whom we organized three seminars on inclusion. We had 81 students from the third and fifth grades with us, to whom we talked about diversity, inclusion, the abilities of people with disabilities and adapted sports.

The children asked questions, were curious to learn more about the adaptations that allow people with disabilities to lead a normal life, and listened to success stories from some of the participants in the Motivation programs. We also talked about examples of good practice in communication and interaction with people with disabilities. Another interesting moment was when the little ones had the opportunity to learn more about the career of our colleague, Ciprian Lupu, the first car pilot using a wheelchair in Romania. At the end of the seminars, we organized wheelchair relays – an interesting and constructive game for children. Thus, they have a better understanding of what is involved in handling a mobility device, avoiding obstacles and maintaining direction.

The seminars on inclusion took place as a result of #TeamMotivation’s participation in the 2022 edition of Bikeathon Țara Făgărașului, in our project Speaning the Wheels of Change in the schools of Țara Făgărașului. Also, the activities were made possible by the project Advocacy project for wheelchair users’ access to the community, carried out with the financial support of Active Citizens Fund Romania.

Events of this type contribute to the creation of an inclusive school environment for students with and without disabilities, by increasing awareness of the issue of people with disabilities and promoting a school climate based on acceptance, tolerance, inclusion and respect.

We are grateful to the teaching staff from “Doamna Stanca” National College Făgăraș and Sâmbăta de Sus Secondary School, as well as to the partners from the Community Foundation Ţara Făgărașului for their support in organizing these seminars.

Through the Advocacy project for wheelchair users’ community access, we aim to support people with disabilities in promoting their rights and abilities. Thus, we create the conditions for increasing the degree of inclusion, at the community level. The project is implemented by Motivation Romania Foundation in partnership with Segoia Association, with the financial support of Active Citizens Fund Romania, a program financed by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants 2014-2021.
