Some shoes change the story. So do appropriate wheelchairs!
Remember the last time your shoes hurt? You felt the pain shoot through your brain, every step of the way! You fell on the sofa and kicked them as far away as you could. You felt that if you wore them two more minutes, you would explode.
Did you know that, for a person with disabilities, an inappropriate wheelchair is like a pair of painfully uncomfortable shoes? The only difference is, they have to sit in the wheelchair every day, hour after hour. In Romania, thousands of people with mobility disabilities receive inappropriate wheelchairs every year. Wheelchairs that cause pain and are a danger to their health.
It does not have to be this way. Until now, Motivation Romania Foundation donated over 25,000 appropriate wheelchairs. Over 25,000 children and adults now go to school, practice sports, go out with their friends and enjoy life.

In Romania, the public health system pays, once every 3 years, the cost of a wheelchair. The subsidy covers a poor-quality wheelchair that is inappropriate for the abilities and needs of most users.
The wheelchair is a mobility equipment used by children and adults with mobility difficulties due to health conditions, whether temporary or permanent. These include amputations, arthritis, polio, muscle dystrophy, spinal injury, spina bifida, brain seizure or visual impairments. Wheelchairs are also used by elderly persons.
An appropriate wheelchair is one that is adapted to the needs and abilities of their users. As such, the wheelchair has a significant positive impact upon the independence and social inclusion of its user, reducing the need for assistance from those around them.
The wheelchair is an essential element for participation of people with mobility disabilities to education and employment, and contributes to better health and quality of life (World Health Organization and USAID, Joint position paper on the provision of mobility devices in less resourced settings, 2011, p.7).
