Young people with disabilities deserve and can have a fulfilling life!<\/p>\n<p><em>Project funded with the financial support of RO10-CORAI program, program funded through 2009-2014 EEA Grants and managed by the Romanian Social Development Fund.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The results of the project\u00a0Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Motivation Romania Foundation announces the closure of the project Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania. The project was developed between January 20 2015 and January 31 2017 by Motivation Romania Foundation in partnership with Special Olympics Foundation from Romania,\u00a0with the financial support of RO10-CORAI program, program funded through 2009-2014 EEA Grants and managed by the Romanian Social Development Fund. The value of the financial support was of\u00a01.927.297,4 RON.<\/p>\n<p>Within the project, 484 youth with developmental and mobility disabilities, living in rural, isolated and poor communities participated in the activities organized under the project and received home visits from our social workers. Out of them, 179 are girls and 65 are people belonging to Roma communities. The project aimed to contribuite to the social and economical inclusion of youth with developmental and mobility disabilities, aged between 16 and 29, by creating a system which includes integrated support services. These included the assessment of the needs of the beneficiaries and personalized intervention through independent living training, adapted sports, counselling to access services dedicated to people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pg\/FundatiaMotivationRomania\/photos\/?tab=album&amp;album_id=1376436222398443\">Sports and independent living training sessions at Buda, Ilfov<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nThree young wheelchair users participated between January 20 and January 31 at a sports and independent living training session held in Buda, Ilfov County. The three participants became wheelchair users because of the accidents they had. Under the guidance of our colleagues &#8211; physiotherapists and independent living trainers, they learned more about the changes they go through because of the spinal cord injury and about effective ways to overcome the barriers that may appear. The participants and their assistants came from rural areas of Gorj and Harghita counties. During the training sessions, they learned more about how they could develop and maintain their abilities even at home, by doing specific exercises, recommende by our physiotherapists. He studies Polytechnic, has a younger brother for whom he is an example and he drives an adapted care. To relax, he practices sports and designs all kind of machines. He is a wheelchair user because of a car accident that took away from him more than the ability to walk. Despite all these, he is an example of ambition and strength. She attended several activities, such as The Mobility Caravan, sports and independent living training sessions and a sports camp for wheelchair users. She improved her skills with each activity and she is now able to overcome obstacles in her wheelchair, to do the wheelie, to trenafer in and out of her wheelchair without support. The three participants and their personal assistants learned more about the advantages of using an appropriate wheelchair, they received new mobility equipment and learned basic wheelchair handling skills. The two participants live in rural areas of Dambovita and Timis counties and they had the occasion to learn more about how to be independent &#8211; \u00a0they exercised wheelchair handling techniques and got involved in household activities. They learned from our independent living trainers more wheelchair handling techniques and how to overcome the obstacles they meet. Under the guidance of our physiotherapists, they tried new exercises, in order to improve their balance, to decrease their spasticity and to increase their strength. They also established workout programs to be done at home. The program of the sports camp included trainings for wheelchair basketball, archery, athletics, bocce and badminton. These took place under the guidance of our sports trainers. The participants had previously attended independent living training sessions which helped them to gain self confidence and to learn how to manage by themselves. The program also included visits in the area, which allowed the participants to improve their wheelchair handling techniques. The program was attended by three wheelchair users living in rural areas of Giurgiu, Cluj and D\u00e2mbovi\u021ba counties. The participants had the opportunity to find out more about independent living and basic selfcare skills. All of the attendants received medals and applause. These sessions took place in Ramnicu Valcea town.<\/p>\n<p>Under the guidance of an independent living instructor and a physiotherapist, there were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair. \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The <\/strong><strong>Mobility and Independent Living Caravan arrived in Cluj and Sibiu<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Between 21 and 24 April, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation provided independent living services for the first 52 beneficiaries of the project &#8220;Mobility and independent living services for youth with disabilities in Romania&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>These services have been delivered within the \u201cThe Mobility and Independent Living Caravan\u201d which took place from April 21 to 22 in the village of Alma (Sibiu county), and from April 23 to 24 in the village of Cojocna (Cluj county).<\/p>\n<p>The 52 youth with disabilities who attended these events enjoyed the attention of a multidisciplinary team (independent living trainer, physiotherapist, nurse and wheelchair technician).They received services including: health assessment and health counseling, independent living training, donation and fitting\/adaptation of appropriate mobility equipment, sports skills assessment, information on the rights of persons with disabilities, and needs assessment for social support services.<\/p>\n<p>During the project, the Mobility Caravan will serve 300 youth with intellectual and physical disabilities across the entire country. The following counties will host our Caravan in the upcoming months: Harghita, Brasov, Iasi, Bacau, Gorj, Valcea, Buzau and Braila. The press conference gathered over 25 guests, including media representatives, NGOs directly involved in working with people with disabilities and local authorities\u2019 representatives. Among the latter was also the mayor of Alma, the village where the first Mobility and Independent Living Caravan will take place. Through this action we will provide mobility equipment and services for young people with developmental and physical disabilities who currently have limited access to the services they need. The mobile services provided through the Caravan will be present in Alma (Sibiu county) and Cojocna (Cluj county) at the end of April.
