Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania
Disability should not mean isolation. Young people with disabilities deserve and can have a fulfilling life!

- The results of the project Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania
Motivation Romania Foundation announces the closure of the project Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania. The project was developed between January 20 2015 and January 31 2017 by Motivation Romania Foundation in partnership with Special Olympics Foundation from Romania, with the financial support of RO10-CORAI program, program funded through 2009-2014 EEA Grants and managed by the Romanian Social Development Fund. The value of the financial support was of 1.927.297,4 RON.
Within the project, 484 youth with developmental and mobility disabilities, living in rural, isolated and poor communities participated in the activities organized under the project and received home visits from our social workers. Out of them, 179 are girls and 65 are people belonging to Roma communities. The project aimed to contribuite to the social and economical inclusion of youth with developmental and mobility disabilities, aged between 16 and 29, by creating a system which includes integrated support services. These included the assessment of the needs of the beneficiaries and personalized intervention through independent living training, adapted sports, counselling to access services dedicated to people with disabilities.
- Sports and independent living training sessions at Buda, Ilfov
Three young wheelchair users participated between January 20 and January 31 at a sports and independent living training session held in Buda, Ilfov County. The three participants became wheelchair users because of the accidents they had. Under the guidance of our colleagues – physiotherapists and independent living trainers, they learned more about the changes they go through because of the spinal cord injury and about effective ways to overcome the barriers that may appear. They also learned and practiced wheelchair handling techniques and they developed self-care and independent living skill. Debates on the rights of people with disabilities and ways to prevent medical complications associated to spinal cord injuries brought new perspectives for the participants and information they use in their everyday lives.
Two wheelchair users attendend the sports and independent living training sessions held between 9-19 January in Buda, Ilfov County. The participants and their assistants came from rural areas of Gorj and Harghita counties. During the training sessions, they learned more about how they could develop and maintain their abilities even at home, by doing specific exercises, recommende by our physiotherapists. Also, they learned more about correct wheelchair handling and overcoming the barriers.
Fabian is a young and motivated young man. He studies Polytechnic, has a younger brother for whom he is an example and he drives an adapted care. To relax, he practices sports and designs all kind of machines. He is a wheelchair user because of a car accident that took away from him more than the ability to walk. Despite all these, he is an example of ambition and strength. He participated in independent living training sessions, in a sports camp for wheelchair users, organized within our project Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania.

Adina overcame many of the difficulties she had faced over time, as a result of her participation in the activities developed within our project. She attended several activities, such as The Mobility Caravan, sports and independent living training sessions and a sports camp for wheelchair users. She improved her skills with each activity and she is now able to overcome obstacles in her wheelchair, to do the wheelie, to trenafer in and out of her wheelchair without support. Moreover, on the occasion of our wheelchair sports camp, she left home by herself for the very first time and she is proud that she could handle the situation.

- Sports and indepdendent living training sessions, Buda, Ilfov County
Three wheelchair users participated between November 7 to 17 in a sports and independent living training session held in Buda, Ilfov County. The three participants and their personal assistants learned more about the advantages of using an appropriate wheelchair, they received new mobility equipment and learned basic wheelchair handling skills. They also leanred more about the experience of our independent living trainers and left home more motivated to become independent.

Two young wheelchair users participated, between October 24 to November 3, in a sports and independent living training session held in Buda, Ilfov County. The two participants live in rural areas of Dambovita and Timis counties and they had the occasion to learn more about how to be independent – they exercised wheelchair handling techniques and got involved in household activities. Moreover, they discussed about the problems they met and looked for solutions, along with our colleagues – independent living trainers and physiotherapists.
Two young wheelchair users participated between October 10 to October 20 in a sports and independent living training session organized in Buda, Ilfov County. They learned from our independent living trainers more wheelchair handling techniques and how to overcome the obstacles they meet. Under the guidance of our physiotherapists, they tried new exercises, in order to improve their balance, to decrease their spasticity and to increase their strength. They also established workout programs to be done at home. Our trainees also joined a wheelchair basketball demonstration.
Between September 26 to 30, 18 wheelchair users coming from different rural areas of the country, participated in annual sports competitions organized in Bucharest. The program of the sports camp included trainings for wheelchair basketball, archery, athletics, bocce and badminton. These took place under the guidance of our sports trainers. The participants had previously attended independent living training sessions which helped them to gain self confidence and to learn how to manage by themselves. During the camp, the athletes made new friends, they developed the feeling od being part of the team and enjoyed the medals they received at the end of the camp.
- Sports and independent living training sessions, Vâlcea County
Between September 20 to 30, our team in Vâlcea County organized an active rehabilitation program which included physiotherapy and independent living training sessions. The program also included visits in the area, which allowed the participants to improve their wheelchair handling techniques. The participants learned more about their abilities and about ways to improve their lifestyle from our independent living trainers, also wheelchair users, who participated in the event.
- Independent living training and sports sessions, Buda, Ilfov County
Between September 19 to 29, new independent living training and sports sessions were held in Buda, Ilfov County. The program was attended by three wheelchair users living in rural areas of Giurgiu, Cluj and Dâmbovița counties. The participants had the opportunity to find out more about independent living and basic selfcare skills. They found out more about the rights they have and participated in adaptated sports activities, for the first time in their life, along with our independent living trainers and physiotherapists.
Between 5 to 15 September, three wheelchair users participated in the independent living training and sports sessions held in Buda, Ilfov County. The participants spend a few days away from their home and had the chance to use this time in order to know and overcome their limists, under the guidance of our colleagues who are also wheelchair users and the physiotherapists in our team. The three took part in demonstrations and exercises of wheelchair handling and also in discussion on the rights of people with disabilities, medical complications that may occur and ways to prevent them.
Between 5 to 15 September 2016, a new session of independent living and adapted sports took place in Vâlcea County, The participants tried the correc wheelchair handling techniques explained by our independent living trainers and physiotherapists. Also, discussions on the correct positioning in a wheelchair and the rights of people with disabilities were held. Our trainers also provided advice on emotional aspects and healthcare solutions.
Between 5 to 11 September 2016, 10 wheelchair users atended sports and indepednent living training sessions organized by our teams from Iași and Neamț Counties at Văratec. The participants learned more about wheelchair handling techniques and an independent living. They also discussed about the issues they met and solutions that could meet their needs. Under the guidance of our colleagues, independent living trainers and physiotherapists, the wheelchair users who attendend the program managed to become more independent and to overcome their limits.
Between September 5 to 9 2016, we and our partners at Special Olympics Romania organized a sports camp for youth with developmental disabilities, hosted by the National University of Physical Education and Sports. The training sessions of basketball, badminton and bocce ended with a final competition that gave the participants the opportunity to prove the abilities they have and the skills they developed. All of the attendants received medals and applause. At the final ceremony we also enjoyed the presence of Andra Gogan, who handled the medals and danced with our winners.
Between August 29 to September 4, our teams in prahova, Brașov and Mureș counties organized independent living training and sports activities for 11 wheelchair users, at our camp from Văratec, Neamț County. The wheelchair handling exercises were accompanied by discussion on the rights of people with disabilities, the obstacles they may meet and ways to overcome them Also, our independent living trainers shared their experience on how to achieve independent living skills and to become a good professional and an active friend and family member.
Two wheelchair users from Vâlcea and Prahova County participated in the sports and independent living training sessions at Buda, Ilfov County, from August 22 to September 1. Under the guidance of our independent living trainers and physiotherapists, they took part in the demonstrations and exercises to achieve wheelchair handling skills. They also took part in physiotherapy sessions and learned new things that would help them every day. the training sessions included wheelchair maneuvering demonstrations, discussion on the correct positioning, the rights of people with disabilities, emotional aspects and aspects related to healthcare.
10 wheelchair users participated in the ports and independent living training sessions organized in Văratec, Neamț County, between August 22 to 28, with the suport of our regional teams in Cluj, Sibiu and Satu Mare counties. The independent living training sessions and wheelchair handling training were completed by the discussions on the rights of people with disabilities, the obstacles that the participants had met and solutions they could use in order to overcome these. Moreover, all the participants enjoyed the landscapes in the area and practiced their wheelchair handling techniques.
- Sports and independent living training session in Buda, Ilfov CountyThree young wheelchair users from Dâmbovița, Prahova and Buzău counties, out of which two boys and a girl, accompanied by family members. attended sports and independent living training sessions in Buda village, Ilfov County, from August 8 to August 18. They followed the advice of our trainers and managed to learn essential things in order to lead an independent life, such as transfer techniques and wheelchair handling techniques. They also participated in discussions meant to find the right solutions for the problems they have faced during time.

On August 4, we said goodbye to the three participants that attended our independent living training sessions at Buda, Ilfov County, between Julty 25 to August 4. The three girls came to us from Prahova, Olt and Timiș counties, willing to overcome their limits and to find solutions for all the obtacles they previoulsy met. They participated in wheelchair handling demonstrations and debates on the rights of people with disabilities and on obstacles associated to disability.
Between 11 to 21 July, there were organized sports and independent living training activities in Buda, Ilfov County. The participants were two wheelchair users living in rural areas of Mehedinți and Brașov counties. They learned how to use their wheelchairs and how to become more independent. They also participated in adapted sports trainings and become more confident and willing to overcome their limits.
- The friends of our Mobility and Independent Living Training CaravanOur multi-disciplinary teams meets new friends each time the Mobility Caravan stops in a new village. We have the chance to find new stories from our beneficiaries and we try to add new beautiful memories to these. We are happy when new people join our initiatives, because we know that together we can do more. Our volunteers and people from the local communities are often there to give a hand. At Vișinești, among all these, we were accompanied by two young journalists, voluntters of DoR – a storytelling magazine – Alia Zariosu and Elena Văduva. They were helpful, focused and supportive and they helped us share the stories of our beneficiaries.

12 wheelchair users from isolated villages took part in the activities held by the Mobility Caravan within June 27 to July 1. The mobile workshop was accompanied by disability professionals and stopped in Vișinești, Dâmbovița County. The participants received new wheelchairs or service for their old one, recommendations on how to take care of their health and to exercise daily, in order to be more independent. They also talked with our colleagues about the rights of people with disabilities, accessibility and programs designed to improve their participation in their communities.
Between June 27 to July 7, a new session of adapted sports and independent living training was held in Buda village, Ilfov County. The participants were three young men, selected from the participants in Mobility Caravan in Cerțești, Galați County. They learned more about using their wheelchairs safe and correctly. They ere also advised on how to overcome obstacles associated to disability, by our independent living trainers and physiotherapists.
12 young people with mobility disabilities who use wheelchairs took part in the activities held by the Mobility and Independent Living Caravan between June 13 to 17 in Cerțești, Galați County. The participants received new wheelchairs, adjustments and service for their old ones, recommendations on mantaining their health in good condition and an appropriate physiotherapy program, as well as information on their rights.
Between June 13 to 23, two wheelchair users coming from Timiș and Suceava counties participated in independent living and wheelchair sports sesssions, held in Buda, Ilfov County. The two participants learned more about independent living, tried basic wheelchair handling techniques and developed independent living abilities under the guidance of our independent living trainers and physiotherapists.
There were held discusisions on wheelchair handling and solutions to overcome the obstacles, as well as debates on the rights of people with disabilities and effective methods to keep good health condition.
Between May 16 to 26, Motivation Romania Foundation held a new sports and independent living training program in Buda, Ilfov county. The program was attended by three wheelchair users, living in rural or isolated areas from Satu Mare County, who learned how to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist and how to overcome the obstacles associated to disability.
There were conducted demonstrations and exercises on wheelchair handling, discussions about proper wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
This session represents the first activity within the PLUS component of the project Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities in Romania. The activities will take place between May to October 2016.
- Activity assessment
On April 20, a meeting was held in Buda, Ilfov county, to assess the activities within the project. It was attended by wheelchair users – beneficiaries of the project, social workers, a counsellor, physiotherapists and independent living trainers.
Between April 5 to 20, Motivation Romania Foundation held a new sports and independent living training program in Bragadiru (Ilfov county). The program was attended by three wheelchair users, living in rural or isolated areas from Galați, Buzău and Bistrița Năsăud counties, who learn how to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist.
There were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair, discussions about proper wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
14 young wheelchair users living in rural or isolated areas of the country participated between 4 to 8 April at a sports camp. The training sessions and final competitions took place in Bragadiru and Bucharest. The participants played wheelchair basketball, archery and they also tried bocce.
15 young people with intellectual disabilities from isolated rural areas participated between 7 and 13 September at a sports camp, organized in Bucharest, in collaboration with Special Olympics Romania Foundation.
Our coaches initiated the participants in sports such as: bocce, football, athletics and badminton. The activities took place at the National University of Physical Education and Sport.
Between March 14th to 24th, Motivation Romania Foundation organized sports and independent living training sessions for six wheelchair users and their personal assistants. These sessions took place in Ramnicu Valcea town (Valcea county).
Under the guidance of an independent living instructor and a physiotherapist, there were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair. Moreover, we conducted discussions about the right wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
Between January 29th and March 15th, Motivation Romania Foundation helds a new sports and independent living training program in Bragadiru (Ilfov county). The program isattended by wheelchair users, who learn how to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist.

- Call center for young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities
Motivation Romania Foundation established a free call center line, where people can find out more about:

- Project Evaluation
On December 15th, we organized a project evaluation meeting at Bragadiru, Ilfov. The meeting was attended by 3 beneficiaries and members of the project team. The topics that we discussed were related to the need of new services for wheelchair users and the impact that the activities organized within our projects had upon the independent lifestyle of the participants.
Between November 26 and December 11, Motivation Romania Foundation held a new sports and independent living training program in Bragadiru (Ilfov county). The program was attended by three wheelchair users, who have learned to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist.
There were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair, discussions about proper wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
Between 9 and 24 November, Motivation Romania Foundation held a new sports and independent living training program in Bragadiru (Ilfov county). The program was attended by three wheelchair users, who have learned to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist.
There were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair, discussions about proper wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
Between 14 and 29 October, Motivation Romania Foundation held a new sports and independent living training program in Bragadiru (Ilfov county). The program was attended by three wheelchair users, who have learned to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist.

Between 20 and 21 October, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation provided free health assessment and independent living services for young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities in Calarasi and Ialomita counties.
The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan was installed on October 20 in Modelu commune (Calarasi county), and on 21 October in Ograda commune (Ialomita county).
Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation organized between 14 and 16 October Special Olympics annual sports games that addressed young people with intellectual disabilities in disadvantaged areas. 43 young people who participated in the Mobility and Independent Living Caravan came to Bucharest to spend a few days of initiation into sports activities. The sports activities organized here included: bocce, athletics, basketball, football and badminton.
- Sports and independent living training sessions in Bragadiru (Ilfov county)
Between September 27 and October 12, Motivation Romania Foundation held a new sports and independent living training program in Bragadiru (Ilfov county). The program was attended by three wheelchair users, who have learned to be more independent under the guidance of our independent living instructor and physiotherapist.
There were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair, discussions about proper wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
23 wheelchair users from across the country were introduced to adapted sports activities during a sports camp held in Bucharest between 5 and 9 October. The sports activities organized here included: bocce, basketball, athletics and tennis.
September ended with an evaluation meeting of the “Mobility and Independent Living for youth with disabilities from Romania program”.
The meeting was attended by members of the team and direct beneficiaries of the project – young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities from isolated communities who have previously participated in the project.
The program included discussions and suggestions of improvement based on the activities implemented so far, as well as talks about the activities envisaged for the next period.
Three wheelchair users and their personal assistants participated between 7 and 22 September at sports and independent living training sessions organized in Bragadiru city, and conducted under the guidance of Motivation independent living instructors and physical therapists.
The program included information sessions on proper wheelchair positioning, prevention of medical complications associated with disability, discussions about the rights of people with disabilities, physiotherapy exercises, trainings on basic self-care techniques.
Between 6 and 21 September, Motivation Romania Foundation organized sports and independent living training sessions for six wheelchair users and their personal assistants. These sessions took place in Ramnicu Valcea town (Valcea county).
Under the guidance of an independent living instructor and a physiotherapist, there were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair. Under the guidance of an independent living instructor and a physiotherapist, there were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair. Moreover, we conducted discussions about the right wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
Between 11 and 14 August, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation, provided health assessment and independent living services for 59 young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities from Buzau and Braila counties.
The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan was installed between 11 and 12 August in Minzalesti village (Buzau county), and between 13 and 14 August in Galbenu commune (Braila county)

Under the guidance of an independent living instructor and a physiotherapist, there were conducted demonstrations and exercises on how to a handle the wheelchair. Moreover, we conducted discussions about the right wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
Between 5 and 20 July Motivation Romania Foundation organized sports and independent living training sessions for six wheelchair users and their personal assistants. These sessions took place in Ramnicu Valcea town.

Moreover, we conducted discussions about the right wheelchair positioning, about the rights of people with disabilities, and about emotional and healthcare issues related to disability.
Between 7 and 10 July, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation, provided free health assessment and independent living services for 54 young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities from Valcea and Gorj counties.
These services were delivered through a Mobility and Independent Living Caravan that was installed between 7 and 8 July in Barbatesti village (Valcea county) and between 9 and 10 July in Bucsana village (Ilfov county).
Between 16 and 19 June, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation, provided free health assessment and independent living services for 62 young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities from Bacau and Vaslui counties.
The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan was installed between 16 and 18 June in Buhaiesti village, Vulturesti town (Vaslui county), and between 18 and 19 June in Solont town (Bacau county).
- The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan arrived in Harghita and Brasov counties
Between 12 and 15 May, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation provided free health assessment and independent living services for 60 young people with mobility and intellectual disabilities from Harghita and Brasov counties.
The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan was installed between 12 and 13 May in Paul’s Valley village, Corund commune (Harghita county) and between 14 and 15 May in Comana village (Brasov county).
- The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan arrived in Cluj and Sibiu
Between 21 and 24 April, Motivation Romania Foundation and Special Olympics Romania Foundation provided independent living services for the first 52 beneficiaries of the project “Mobility and independent living services for youth with disabilities in Romania”.
These services have been delivered within the “The Mobility and Independent Living Caravan” which took place from April 21 to 22 in the village of Alma (Sibiu county), and from April 23 to 24 in the village of Cojocna (Cluj county).
The 52 youth with disabilities who attended these events enjoyed the attention of a multidisciplinary team (independent living trainer, physiotherapist, nurse and wheelchair technician).They received services including: health assessment and health counseling, independent living training, donation and fitting/adaptation of appropriate mobility equipment, sports skills assessment, information on the rights of persons with disabilities, and needs assessment for social support services.
During the project, the Mobility Caravan will serve 300 youth with intellectual and physical disabilities across the entire country. The following counties will host our Caravan in the upcoming months: Harghita, Brasov, Iasi, Bacau, Gorj, Valcea, Buzau and Braila. - Project Launch
The launch of the „Mobility and Independent Living project for youth with disabilities in Romania” was held on 24th of March, at School Number 1 in Sibiu. The event was organized as a press conference, followed by a wheelchair basketball demonstration. The press conference gathered over 25 guests, including media representatives, NGOs directly involved in working with people with disabilities and local authorities’ representatives. Among the latter was also the mayor of Alma, the village where the first Mobility and Independent Living Caravan will take place. Through this action we will provide mobility equipment and services for young people with developmental and physical disabilities who currently have limited access to the services they need. The mobile services provided through the Caravan will be present in Alma (Sibiu county) and Cojocna (Cluj county) at the end of April.
