At eleven years old, Ianis is very clear about what he wants to become: a basketball player or an architect. He knows what he needs to improve at swimming, and understands that, when he becomes tired, for whatever reason, he should rest but he should not give up.
In 2019, Ianis was forced to be even more perseverant. Then, he was involved in a car accident that forces him to use a wheelchair. Early on, the looks and questions of other children, and their repeated question, made him feel weird. However, as his wheelchair skills improved, so did his self-confidence. Now, he faces stares with a happy face, back straight and eyes ahead.
He loves that he can move in and out of his wheelchair by himself, that he can go up and down curbs, and even steps are no longer a barrier for him – he can descend them in his wheelchair.
Ianis received an active, light wheelchair from Motivation Romania Foundation, and learned to use it at an independent training camp. Our wheelchair instructors are his mentors, friends and…basketball teammates. He fell in love with this sport immediately. The trainings bring him joy and help him put to good use his huge energy reserves.
He tells about all this with his wide and curious eyes, a child who can’t sit still too long, excited by every little victory on his way to a normal life. A life of play, school, LEGO, sports and ice cream as much as possible, in long walks through the public garden.
We want to remain close to Ianis on his life journey, to remind him, if needed, that he can do whatever he dreams of, and also to give him the best mobility solutions, as he grows up and his needs change.
Listen to Ianis tell the story of life in a wheelchair, seen by an 11 years old child!

100 EUR = one wheelchair donated
When someone dear, family or friend, loses their mobility, their world suddenly turn dark. Like Ianis, many people end up using wheelchairs as a result of car accidents, falls from heights, diving into water or due to medical conditions. The beginning of life in a wheelchair is painful and a lot of support is needed.
Every year, Motivation Romania Foundation donates more than 1,000 wheelchairs to children and adults with disabilities all over the country and gives back their freedom of movement.
500 EUR = one person in a wheelchair attends training at Motivation
At the camps, participants learn from Motivation trainers, wheelchair users themselves, to manage on their own, from doing seemingly simple things such as personal hygiene, dressing, putting on shoes, to moving with a wheelchair in an environment as little accessible as the one in Romania.
1,000 EUR = lunches for one month, for the youth living in our homes *
Since 2003, Motivation is a family for 25 youth with moderate and severe disabilities, whom we transferred from state-run institutions when they were children. We give our youth the protection and warmth of a family, as well as access to therapies that help them discover themselves and improve their skills.
* this is one cost example, among the many expenses we need to cover, in order to support our young people with housing, 24 hour care, medicine, therapy, etc.
20% for Motivation = 100% for lives changed for the better
