This year, Urology Week is marked from September 23 to 29. The initiative comes from the European Association of Urology and brings together national urology societies, urologists, healthcare professionals, patients, and their families to deliver common messages aimed at increasing public awareness about urological conditions.
Across Europe, Urology Week features relevant events and discussions on new technologies, perspectives, and treatment options for urinary incontinence. Experiences of people facing this issue are also shared to encourage others to seek medical advice. Statistics show that up to 45% of Europeans have experienced incontinence at least once in the last 12 months, while less than a third have ever sought medical support. Most do not treat the condition due to stigma or lack of awareness.
Urology Week provides an opportunity to educate the public about regularly checking their health to detect incontinence symptoms early. A key message of the awareness campaign is that prevention is better than treatment, and that a proactive approach can save lives.
Webinar on Urinary Management for People with Spinal Cord Injuries
In people with spinal cord injuries, regardless of the injury level, the urinary system’s function is also affected. This often manifests as a sudden urge to urinate, uncontrolled urine leakage, painful bladder spasms, awareness of the need to urinate too late, night-time urine loss, or even the inability to urinate (urinary retention).
These issues impact the lives of people with spinal cord injuries both socially and psychologically. It affects going out, traveling, meeting friends, work activities, and self-esteem, among other aspects. For a natural and independent life, those with spinal cord injuries need to use various helpful techniques for effective urinary management and follow specialists’ recommendations. It’s also crucial to prevent medical complications like urinary infections, which are common in people with mobility disabilities and can lead to serious health issues or, if untreated, even death.
Therefore, during Urology Week, Motivation Romania Foundation, in partnership with Dr. Neuro-Urologist Andrei Manu-Marin from Evomed Clinic, is organizing a free webinar on “Managing Urinary Incontinence in People with Spinal Cord Injuries.” The event will take place on Wednesday, October 2, starting at 3:00 PM on the Zoom platform. Spots are limited, and registration can be done via the link: https://forms.office.com/e/CLHnyb0kDh
This event is designed to raise awareness about incontinence and provide essential information on symptoms and treatment options from the perspective of neuro-urology specialist Dr. Andrei Manu-Marin. Participants will gain valuable insights into preventing medical complications related to incontinence, focusing on practical methods and expert advice. The webinar will include a brief introduction followed by an interactive Q&A session. Access is free upon prior registration.
Similar actions have been held in the past as part of a broader initiative to raise awareness and provide information on managing spinal cord injury-related issues effectively, promoting an active lifestyle.
