On Monday, April 11, we met the students of the “Georg Daniel Teutsch” School from Agnita, Sibiu County, for a seminar on inclusion. 20 primary school students joined us and we told them more about diversity, inclusion, the abilities of people with disabilities and adapted sports. Among them, there were two children who use wheelchairs.
The children took part in games, which emphasized the power of together and highlighted how students can work together, despite having or not a disability, and how they can all enjoy play and education.
The little ones found out more about the journey of our colleague, Ciprian Lupu, the first race driver in Romania who is a wheelchair user, and asked questions about his activity.
In addition, at the end of the meeting, we organized a wheelchair relay – so that children without disabilities understood better how it is like to handle mobility equipment, while avoiding obstacles and maintaining the right direction.
The inclusion seminar took place following the #TeamMotivation participation in the 2021 edition of Bikeathon Țara Făgărașului biking event. From the funds raised for our project Change the story of children and adults in wheelchairs from Făgăraș County, we engaged to donate five suitable wheelchairs and organize a seminar for students.
The event contributes to the creation of an inclusive school environment for students with and without disabilities, by raising awareness about people with disabilities and by promoting a school climate based on acceptance, tolerance, inclusion and respect.
We are grateful to the teachers from “Georg Daniel Teutsch” and to our partners from Țara Făgărașului Community Foundation for their support in organizing this seminar.
The project “Advocacy for wheelchair users’ access to the community” is run by Motivation Romania Foundation in partnership with the Segoia Association, with the financial support of Active Citizens Fund Romania, program funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through EEA Grants 2014-2021. The project aims to support the social inclusion of people with disabilities by improving the mobility and health of wheelchair users.
